NSFA Annual Meeting a Success

Over 200 members of the Nova Scotia Federation of Agriculture (NSFA) gathered for its 114th annual meeting in Truro on November 24 & 25th to discuss current issues and set direction for the coming year.

Farmers re-elected Richard Melvin as their President and spokesperson for the coming year to carry forward their policy objectives.  Richard is co-owner of Melvin Farms Ltd.  Melvin Farms is a 5th generation family farm located in the Annapolis Valley near Canning, NS where they specialize in production of fresh vegetables for sale throughout Atlantic Canada.

Richard Melvin will lead an executive team consisting of Beth Densmore 1st Vice President, Mary McCarron 2nd Vice President, and members at large; David Young, Edna Foster, Danny Davison and Dennis Boudreau who is also CFA Director.

During the coming year the farm community in Nova Scotia, under the leadership of the NSFA Executive, will be challenging policy makers with a number of ideas and concepts directed at achieving a competitive and sustainable agricultural economy in Nova Scotia.

Presentations from the meeting are available for download.

We also had a presentation by Tony Nette, NS Department of Natural Resources.  Mr. Nette told the group that the most loss caused by wildlife on agricultural land is from deer, bear and raccoons.  He talked about deer management zones and the possibility of increasing harvest limits where deer are a problem.  He also mentioned that nuisance wildlife permits will soon be easier to obtain.  Presentation Revising Deer Zones  ( pdf 18MB)
