Agriculture is the KEY for Nova Scotia’s Economic Sustainability and Growth
The Nova Scotia Federation of Agriculture is hoping candidates are listening to their messages during this election campaign.
TRURO - Agriculture is a key industry important to all Nova Scotians; for its contribution to our economy, for its role in sustaining rural communities, for food security and for its contribution to health and the environment.
Richard Melvin, President of Nova Scotia Federation of Agriculture says that, "As we approach the important June 9th election it is imperative to consider the future of our province. The agriculture sector has the ability and desire to be a key partner with the people of Nova Scotia in achieving a sustainable environment and economic prosperity as outlined in the 2007 Environmental Goals and Sustainable Prosperity Act.”
Richard also indicates that, “NSFA understands the importance of growth as recognized by the Genuine Progress Index.” The GPI report commissioned in 2008 stated that for every $100 direct contribution of agriculture to the Nova Scotia GDP, about $200 is actually added to the provincial GDP and more than $400 is added to the national GDP when direct and indirect and induced benefits are combined.
It is in the interest of every Nova Scotian to ensure that the industry is strong. Loss of any part of the primary agricultural production sector impacts the viability of rural Nova Scotia and overall food security.
“NSFA asks each of the candidates and parties to turn their thoughts to issues raised in the NSFA 2009 Election document with a long term view which will benefit our province for generations to come.”
NSFA will be also hosting an Agriculture Forum on Monday, June 1st, 2009 at Port Williams Community Centre starting at 10:30 am to hear thoughts and long term views from a representative of each of the 4 major political parties.
