Future of Agriculture and Nova Scotia Food System Top Priorities
Truro – The 114th Annual General Meeting of the Nova Scotia Federation of Agriculture will be held Tuesday and Wednesday of this week; November 24 & 25th at the Best Western Glengarry in Truro.
The meeting will provide a forum for the exchange of ideas relative to the future of agriculture and food systems in Nova Scotia. Richard Melvin, President of the Nova Scotia Federation of Agriculture, says, “In an era of expected dramatic increased costs of energy the role of agriculture in the economy will expand rapidly.” Melvin feels that, “Major opportunities exist to produce more of our own food and energy in the years ahead.” To make this happen will require an aggressive plan requiring major investment by the farming sector as well as a progressive public policy framework with the overarching goal of being both economically and environmentally sustainable.
With increasing concern of the future of agriculture and food security, the farm community is pleased to have Premier Darrel Dexter and John MacDonell, Minister of Agriculture take part in the meeting. The farm community also welcomes Don McCabe, Vice President Ontario Federation of Agriculture who will be on hand to discuss opportunities in energy conservation and renewal on the farm. Martin Gooch, George Morris Centre will address the meeting on Tuesday with information on a recent value chain research project, “Diagnostic Assessment of Innovation Opportunities within the Atlantic Pork Sector”. These items along with presentations on farm safety and food action will compliment the opportunity for networking and farm fellowship.
During the Federation’s evening banquet the winner for the Environmental Stewardship Award and the annual Agricultural Awareness Award will be presented. The evening will include a delicious Nova Scotia beef dinner and an auction in support of the NSFA Senate Club’s Gambia Project.
